Principal's Welcome

Welcome Thornton Thunderbirds!

My name is Craig Wilson and I bring 22 years of educational experience to Thornton. My family and I are originally from Sugar Land where I taught for many years in elementary, middle and high school.  After ten years as a principal, I am glad to be stewarding my seventh year here at Thornton.

The 2017-2018 year continues to build on the successes we’ve made over the past few years.  We emphasize a rigorous curriculum, strong student engagement, the necessity of parent involvement, and a firm but fair approach to discipline.  The addition of our bilingual program only serves to make our achievement that much stronger.

This school year our ACE program continues to be operated under a grant through TISD and the Region 12 Education Service Center.  ACE provides at-risk students with before- and after-school opportunities for tutoring, enrichment, and character development.  ACE works side-by-side with your teachers and staff to develop skills necessary for your child to be even more successful.

The Thornton family focuses on the strengths and challenges of the individual student and the school as a whole. Teachers, principals and instructional coaches meet on a weekly basis to analyze performance and ask ourselves these four basic questions:

  • What do we want students to learn?
  • How will we know if they have learned it?
  • What will we do if they don't learn it?
  • What will we do if they already know it?

Partnering with a vibrant, caring community is a top priority!  Ways to become involved include:

  • Helping in classrooms
  • Tutoring students when you’re available
  • Helping in the library
  • Joining WatchDOGS (a way for the men of our community to volunteer a little time)
  • As a member of our Parent Teacher Organization
  • Mentoring a 5th Grader
  • Establishing Community and Business partnerships
  • Being a member of the Campus Leadership Team
  • Translate and be at Parent Events

Great things continue to happen here at Thornton as we keep a laser-like focus on the needs of students and having an intentional focus on instruction.

My door is open to you at any time. Take care of friends and family. It’s a great year, and Go ‘Birds!

Mr. Craig A. Wilson
